It looks like it could cost about $1,400 to rent a minivan in NYC and drive it across the country to Seattle in 10 days.  Not counting gas and hotels and such.  I hear others have done it as cheaply as $600 and even $1,100.  Why would it be so much more expensive now?  Are car rentals seasonal?  Shouldn't there be a social networking site that helps people sell cars on Craigslist and have them driving across the country by people who need to have them shipped?  Everyone would save money.

Does anyone in NYC have a fairly large car that they want to sell for less than $2,000, or lend to us for $1,000?  I figure it's worth at least asking.

Yes! There should be!
back in the olden days, my parents and I found these things in the newspaper. That's how I got to college in the fall. But that was from NYC to Florida, and the cars were always big old Cadillacs.

it does exist on craigslist :) there's a rideshare section in every city used for this purpose. buster, you should def. place an ad (after first checking to see that someone hasn't already requested this)

definitely don't rent a car. ive used craigslist rideshare for multiple long distance travelling adventures and it's been awesome.

1- look into renting in NJ or somewhere else outside the city, it's usually cheaper

2- I believe that's called a driveaway, I've searched for them before...

the problem with driveaway is that you don't get to pick exactly when you leave and this trip is super-time sensitive.

New Jersey turned out to be more expensive, sadly. Delaware is way cheaper though, so we may rent one car to take to Delaware with all our goods and then pull a switcheroo for the rest of the trip. Brilliant, no?

what if we rented the car out of delaware? does that change the pricing at all?

i'm not quite sure how we would get the stuff from my house to delaware... but it's figure-out-able.

yes, it's cheaper if you rent outside the city. rent it and then drive back to your place and pick up your stuff. sillies.

$1,400? You could probably buy a car for that and then turn around and sell it... That's what the frugal traveller on nytimes.com did when he was driving across country this summer. You could also post on Craigslist and see if anyone needs their car driven cross-country.

Buying the car crossed my mind... but the hassle of insurance and all that sorta killed it for me.

Just sell all your stuff and fly there. You'll be liberated from Earthly possessions and can start all over. Plus, you'll be flush with cash!

newark airport

I just checked and it looks like that's even MORE expensive. $152/day instead of $136/day. LAME, right?
