I went to the doctor today and asked him to give me a chest x-ray because I want to make sure I don't have cancer (two previous generations of my family have gotten it right about now in their lives).  I was refused, sent home with antibiotics, steroid inhalers, and 3 weeks of patience to see if this cough goes away and is not actually related to spuriously dividing cancer cells eating my body away.

that is going to be a rough 3 weeks.

I'm persistent enough to be annoying in one doctor's visit, but I'm not really persistent enough to wait 3 weeks and go back. Now's the cancer's chance, I guess.

get a better doctor, xrays are cheap

I agree. Go to another doctor. Absolutely.

forthded...

doctors these days!!! i tell ya!!

X-rays also expose you to unnecessary radiation if they are not needed. Why would you think this was a cost issue?

Then go get an MRI. No Radiation risk.

No offense dude, but this is EXACTLY why health care is so damned expensive in the US.

No offense taken.

After having a large tumour taken out of me, I am just more inclined to test early.

not entirely safe for work or stomach contents

Yeah, I agree it's not a cost issue. And he's probably doing the right thing to deny my x-rays whenever I want them.

That's the thing. This isn't the first or last time you've asked, right? If he indulged you every time, that's a lot of radiation...

I had a persistent cough for a few weeks in January, along with 3 out of 4 people in my household, and we all got antibiotics and I got inhalers. I'm not sure if any of the meds helped but the cough (bronchitis, really) eventually went away and life was good again. Tough it out a little longer. Spring is coming.
