I think this career advice from Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, is pretty spot on.  It's how I get most of my stuff done.  Take ideas from one place, execute them in another place, and throw something else into the mix that you're really excited about, and BAM a good if not great idea.  When I used to write songs, I would listen to two songs that I admired, one in each ear, and unfocus my ears until a third tune came out.  Or, try combining two or three books into one (Harry Potter is basically Star Wars + Lord of the Rings + The Chronicles of Narnia).  All the ideas are right in front of us.  New is not as important as relevant.  There are a million good ships to hop on.  Leave the wagon alone though.

Good advice. The trick is figuring out how to combine those talents. I'm still working on that one.

I'm intrigued to read Scott Adams' advice, but I have to take issue with your example. You can't combine three brilliant works of genius and get a mediocre work of mass hysteria.
