is it weird that i don't really get (or believe in) the concept of evil? i wonder if that ties at all to how i was raised in terms of religion (a barely practicing jew - and reform judaism doesn't really have the concept of evil anyway)? probably not, but it's a thought. i feel like it's a religiously based idea, at least in some way or perhaps in origin.

I actually agree. That's the reason I started thinking about this and I took out the question about whether or not they believed that evil existed... because I ended up just realizing that it's a semantic thing... whether or not evil exists depends on what you define it to be. A universal absolute evil that can be mined out in a court of law is probably what religion and government have trained us to believe exists, but both of those institutions also have the concept of the "spirit of the law" and the "end of the law" and I think our world is slowly getting over the idea of evil and moving on to something more about good and bad style/aesthetic/intention or whatever.

This is exactly my thought. I don't feel right taking the poll because I don't get/believe in "evil."

This turned out to be a cool little poll, actually...

Baudrillard had a book called "The Transparency of Evil" that I read in a film studies class, and while I don't remember all of it, I do remember that one of his theses is that while we can understand and sort good from bad, we can't understand real evil, like the religious fundamentalism that would breed terrorism, because it exists outside our nice little system and isn't compatable with it or our social norms. Anyway... something to look up...
